(#186) Amplifying Benefits: Mindfulness + Slow Breathing

It’s Friday, so a new 411 is available: Acute fall and long-term rise in oxygen saturation in response to meditation.

Hundreds (maybe thousands) of studies have been performed on slow breathing.

From my understanding, the most significant adverse effect that’s ever been discovered from this research is that people tend to hyperventilate when they’re first learning (the slow breathing rate is challenging, so they overcompensate by breathing more).

This study (unknowingly) discovered a way to lessen this effect: Combine slow breathing with mantra-based mindfulness.  This tends to reduce breathing volume while still getting the HRV benefits of slow breathing.

Read or listen to the full 411 for more.

In good breath,

Nick
